TC19-12

Title of the activity
Trade in Value-Added Statistics and Global Value Chains.
Activity Type
Thematic course/Workshop
Description
The course is targeted at trade statisticians and economist-statisticians, involved in the compilation of trade-related statistics and/or the analysis of international trade.
The course addresses the concept and the statistical approach of Trade in Value Added (TiVA) as well as the different ways to assess the impact of Global Value Chains (GVCs) on trade. Individual sessions will cover a wide range of topics related to TiVA and GVCs. The first day of the training will be devoted to the role of the WTO to foster the integration of developing economies in GVCs as well as the key trade policy messages arising from TiVA. The next days will focus on the statistics and methodology underlying TiVA data as well as the detailed presentation of TiVA-GVC indicators most commonly used for trade analysis.

In addition to presentations from WTO staff and experts from other international organizations, live demos and interactive hands-on-exercises will be organized to assist the trainees in using TiVA online databases and demonstrate the way TiVA indicators are compiled. A set of GVC case studies in developing economies will also be presented to the audience.

The services from two international experts should be hired for the training, for two days each. ERSD organizers will consider the use of videoconferencing to access additional external expert(s) with specific expertise.

Active participation from the participants is expected and fostered through group discussions, round tables and the sharing of experience.
